At the completion of the National Bank Cup netball competition in 2007, Southland and Otago joined forces to make a bid for one of the five New Zealand teams in the ANZ Championship in 2008. The Southern Sting and Otago Rebels franchises were merged to create the Southern Steel.

Southland boasts a proud history with the game of basketball and after years of vision, dedication and hard work it all finally paid off as the Southland Sharks joined the New Zealand National Basketball League for the first time in 2010.

​Thanks to a determined committee as well as numerous support people all doing their best to keep the dream alive, we were able to deliver arguably the most professional organisation, the most fanatical crowds as well as some of the most exciting basketball the NBL has seen in years.

ILT Stadium Southland is also home to New Zealand's very first indoor cycling velodrome. The SIT Zerofees Velodrome is a world class facility that allows for many opportunities to have a go at cycling whether you are a beginner or an expert.

Cycling Southland oversee the use of the velodrome track, for any bookings or enquiries regarding cycling, please contact them.

They offer weekly track sessions for children and adults which include competitive and social sessions. They also offer Cyclofit, which provides people of all ages and abilities an opportunity to get back on a bike.

We have four squash courts conveniently located inside the main foyer of ILT Stadium Southland. These courts feature movable walls so that doubles can also be played within our venue. Squash is an excellent sport to improve fitness and have fun with friends at the same time. Racquets and balls are available to hire from reception.
